Born on the 24th of August, 1999. Dorothea Sing Zhang’s filmmaking taps into the curiosity of practical surrealism. She obtained her Bachelor's degree from the Slade School of Fine Art at University College London. She also pursued film studies in Denmark at the Ecole de Leth, where she had the opportunity to learn from acclaimed filmmakers Lars von Trier, Jørgen Leth, and Thomas Vinterberg. In 2024, she wrote and directed Masterpiece Mommy, a short musical film starring Leah Dou that made its world premiere in competition at the 49th Toronto International Film Festival. It received the European Film Award nomination at Dokufest and is now shortlisted for the European Film Awards in 2026. Her new short film A Small Fiction of My Mother in Beijing also made its world premiere in competition at the 50th Toronto International Film Festival. She is currently in pre-production for her third short film, Girl in Dune (working title), which will complete the third instalment of the Mommy trilogy.
In addition to her film work, Sing Zhang has contributed photography to various publications, such as VOGUE, DAZED, LOVE, and NOWNESS, among others. Dorothea has worked with some of the world’s most exciting brands, including Prada to Hermès. She released her debut monograph, Like Someone Alive, in 2023, published by Art Paper Editions, which received coverage from publications including Wallpaper, National Geographic, Photograph Magazine, Numéro.
